The Physics Department at Wellington College is currently hosting a set of Lunar Rock samples belonging to NASA but on loan to the Natural History Museum in London. The set consists of six small samples of rock brought back to Earth by the astronauts from Apollo missions 15, 16 and 17 in 1971 and 1972. We also have six unique meteorites, rocks which have fallen to Earth from space. These include 4 portions of asteroid material, and two very special samples, one from a comet and another which originated on Mars!

The rock samples will be in school for 10 days, allowing many Science and Physics classes to study them. The Astronomy Club is also focusing on the specimens as part of the study of the Moon which we have been looking at this year. This is the third time since 2005 that we have hosted the samples - Wellington College is the only school in Northern Ireland which takes part in the programme of loans of lunar material from NASA.
