Wellington College has won a special award for most relay teams entered in the Belfast City Marathon in May 2012.
In total, Wellington boasted 21 teams, made up of 105 senior pupils and staff. There was an important reason for the large turnout, as teacher-organiser Sarah Cochrane explains, “We were running in memory of one of our past pupils, Sarah Booth, who died tragically in June, 2010. We also participated in last year’s Marathon and raised £6,000 for Cardiac Risk in the Young, a charity which has provided invaluable support to Sarah’s family over the past two years. We hope to match that figure this year. It was great to see so many members of the Wellington community getting involved in such a worthwhile venture and remembering a very special girl.”
Most of the pupils were from Sarah’s year group and also included her brother Owen. Next year, the College hopes to have even more teams involved and continue their fund-raising for CRY.
