It was the 20th anniversary of World Book Day on the 2nd of March 2017. Inspired by the tagline ‘Do Something Booky’, WCB celebrated the occasion in style with a week of events launched by the library including competitions for the staff and students.
Activities included the screening of Book Trailers, Live readings by the librarian Miss Jennings from books set around the world, the hilarious ‘How Many Carnegie Books Can You Hold Without Dropping Them’ contest, the creative and inventive Transform Your Classroom Door Into A Book Cover Challenge and a Muggle Confounding Quiz on the perennially popular Harry Potter. The Year 8 winner of the Book Challenge held 44 books and a Year 10 team were victors in the Quiz defeating Year 8s by half a point!
Entrants in the door contest included the iconic Tardis, ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, ‘Tins’, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Holes’ and ‘Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them’. The prizes were bottles of wine, a box of chocolates and a box of biscuits. The victors were: in Joint First Mrs Johnston and Mrs Loughran from the Biology Department with respectively a stunning tribute to David Attenborough’s ‘Life on Earth’ and a striking Harry Potter door (both are pictured above), in second place the RE Department’s Mrs McKeown with an interpretative psychedelic version of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and in third, Dr Wardlow from the Chemistry Department’s evocative ‘Lord of the Rings’ door.
