On Wednesday 11th April 2018, the Year 13 AS Politics Class – plus Darren McCarroll (Year 14) visited the BBC Blackstaff Studios in Belfast to attend a recording of the ‘Top Table’ Special on the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, hosted by Stephen Nolan.

Political guests on the show included Senator George Mitchell, former Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, Lord David Trimble, Jim Allister MLA and Elisha McCallion MP as well as five younger contributors.

The discussion ranged from how well the Good Friday Agreement is currently performing; whether violence can ever be justified and what will the political future bring for Northern Ireland. While the debates and interactions often lacked real depth, such is the superficiality of ‘sound-bite’ television. That said, the experience did deliver a glimpse of local politicians discussing key local issues.
